Outside a California school, parents and LGBT activists clashed as the board debated whether or not to declare June as Pride month.
Three persons were detained outside of a Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) board meeting when both pro- and anti-LGBTQ+ demonstrators were present.
The board considered the best way to teach about gender and sexuality in schools.
Numerous individuals arrived, some of whom waved Pride flags while others yelled “leave our kids alone” as they screamed out the names of the five members of the school board.
About an hour into the debate of an agenda item calling for June to be designated as Pride Month, fighting broke out. Later that night, everyone came to the conclusion that June ought to be celebrated as Pride Month.
“Attempts to quiet the crowd were unsuccessful.”
For obstructing officers and improperly employing pepper spray, three persons were detained.
Other efforts to quiet the gathering, according to the police, “did not succeed.”
According to many stories, the Proud Boys were present. An all-male far-right organization called The Proud Boys supports and engages in political violence.
One mother present said that the demonstrations had broken her heart since her kid was graduating from a GUSD school on Wednesday.
She reportedly told the Los Angeles Times, “This is a great place to live, and my son got a great education here.”
The board’s guidelines infuriated several individuals.
According to Belissa Cohen, “I’m here on the side of parents who want schools to keep the focus on academics and not on sexual orientation.”
For a few weeks now, protesters have gathered outside board meetings.
“Join the battle against indoctrination in schools.”
Parents were urged to attend the march on Tuesday by the conservative organization GUSD Parents Voices in order to “fight against indoctrination in our schools.”
The Los Angeles Times quoted Jordan Henry, a candidate for Glendale City Council, as saying, “This is about gender ideology being forced on and put on children at Glendale Unified.”
The Glendale-School responded to the criticism on the day of Monday with a statement.
“Currently, false & harmful rumors have been spreading about what our district teaches & how we help our-students,” they stated.
This includes disseminating incorrect information on sex education, transgender and gender nonconforming youth support, and LGBTQIA+ curricula.
