As 2024 approaches, some crazy football marks are almost certain to be broken.
AFCON, the AFC Asian Cup, the Euros, and the Copa America are just a few of the football tournaments that will be held this year. There will also be local football tournaments.
We looked all over the world of football and found seven crazy records that are about to be broken in 2024.
Record number of Premier League games
James Milner played in his 632nd Premier League game against West Ham. He is now tied with Ryan Giggs for second place in the list of players with the most games played in the tournament. He is now only 20 games behind the record-holder, Gareth Barry, who has 652.
The defender for Brighton won’t be able to break the record in 2023–24, but he might be able to tie it at the start of 2024–25. Milner doesn’t look like he’s going to slow down, and he will definitely chase this record.
The oldest player in the Euros
Gabor Kiraly’s famously loose grey pants make him easy to spot. In 2016, when he was 40 years old, the Hungarian custodian was the oldest player to ever play in a Euro event.
His record, on the other hand, could now be broken. You can still see Pepe play for the Portuguese national team. He will be 41 years old when Euro 2024 comes around.
Pepe might become the first player in history to play for Roberto Martinez’s team in the summer, but only time will tell.
The most goals scored in a Bundesliga season
In 2020–21, Robert Lewandowski scored the most goals in a Bundesliga season. At the time, that number seemed impossible for most forwards to beat.
Though, skip ahead a few years and Harry Kane is already on track to smash it. Lewandowski scored 41 goals in the Bundesliga season, which is the most ever in a single season.
At the rate Kane is hitting right now, he’s likely to end his first season in the Bundesliga with 48 goals, which is an absurd number.
As many losses as in a Premier League season
Fans of Burnley and Sheffield United, please look away now. You have the most losses in a Premier League season. Both teams have lost 15 of their first 20 Premier League games of 2023–24, and they could make history in the wrong way.
Both the Clarets and the Blades have lost 75% of their league games so far this season, and they both look like they will lose 28.5 games total this season.
The teams that have lost the most games in a single season are Ipswich Town (1994–95, 42 games), Sunderland (2005–06), Derby (2007–08), and Sheffield United (2020–21).
This bad record could be broken if neither team can get back on track in the second part of the season.
With the most goals in Euros history
With 14 goals, Cristiano Ronaldo already holds the record for most goals scored in a Euros game. He could now be looking to set a new record.
The great Portuguese player needs just one more assist to tie Karel Poborsky’s record of eight assists. With Portugal’s arsenal of weapons, Ronaldo has every chance to break this mark.
Most goals ever scored in a Copa America
Lionel Messi has set another Copa America record by setting up more goals than anyone else. He’s almost the competition’s all-time top scorer.
The record is held by Norberto Mendez of Argentina and Zizinho of Brazil, who both scored 17 goals. Messi has scored 13 goals in the Copa America so far, so he does need to catch up.
It’s not crazy to think that the Inter Miami forward could score more than four goals this time around. He did score four goals in the last event in 2021.
Getting goals in seven different AFCON games
Andre Ayew has scored in seven different AFCON games. If he scores for Ghana in the 2024 tournament, he will make AFCON history.
The Ghanaian forward has scored in six different AFCON games. Only Samuel Eto’o, Kalusha Bwalya, and Asamoah Gyan have scored in more than six tournaments.
Though, no player has ever scored in seven different events. In January, Ayew will have the chance to do this. Ayew will be confident because he has already scored 10 AFCON goals.
