Paris Saint-Germain plays Monaco in a very important game for their chances of winning the Ligue 1 championship, but Lionel Messi is not on the field.

PSG got back on track after a string of bad results after coming back from the World Cup break. Lionel Messi was a big reason why the reigning Ligue 1 champions pulled away from the rest of the pack.

Paris Saint-Germain is on top of the table with 54 points, eight more than Olympique Marseille and Lens, which were only three points behind PSG a few weeks ago.

But the people of Paris still have a long way to go. So, they have to win the next game on the road against Monaco. Messi won’t be playing, so Christophe Galtier will have to find a way to win without him.

Why doesn’t Messi play in the game against Monaco?

Lionel Messi couldn’t play for PSG against Monaco because he hurt his hamstring in Marseille’s French Cup loss on Wednesday. The club said in a statement that the Argentine is getting treatment so that he can return to team practise on Monday.

All eyes will be on Messi’s recovery since PSG will play again in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, when they host Bayern for the first leg of their round-of-16 tie. Everyone at PSG is, of course, hoping that Messi will be ready for that important game.
