One of the most important defense jobs in baseball is the catcher. Every time the ball is thrown, the catcher touches it. The best catchers are like field generals on the mound.

Every catcher can’t be Johnny Bench, though. Some players have played their whole lives with bad defensive skills because they didn’t know any better. Even people who are in the Hall of Fame.

These are the worst catchers in the history of baseball.

Note: To make this list of backstops, we used a number of different measures, like Defensive Wins Above Replacement (dWAR), Total Zone Runs (an estimate of runs saved or given up in the field), errors, and fielding percentage.

1. Ed Taubensee

Career: From 1991 to 2001 (ten years)

Teams: The Cleveland Indians in 1991 and 2001, the Houston Astros from 1992 to 1994, and the Cincinnati Reds from 1994 to 2000.

Statistics: 5,411 chances, 5,003 outs, 343 assists, 65 mistakes, no Gold Gloves.

Fielding percentage: 988;

2. Michael Barrett

Career: From 1998 to 2009, which is 11 years,

Teams: Montreal Expos (1998-2003), Chicago Cubs (2004-07), San Diego Padres (2007-08), Toronto Blue Jays (2009)

Gold Glove Awards: None Stats: 6,741 chances, 6,115 putouts, 552 assists, 74 mistakes

Fielding percentage: 989;

3. Mike Piazza

Career: lasted 15 years, from 1992 to 2007. He played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Florida Marlins, the New York Mets, the San Diego Padres, and the Oakland Athletics.

Stats: 12,247 chances, 11,347 putouts, 768 helpers, 132 mistakes, no Gold Gloves.

Fielding percentage: 989;

defensive wins above replacement: 1.5

4. Ryan Doumit

Career: From 2005 to 2014, (10 years),

Teams: Pittsburgh Pirates from 2005 to 2011, Minnesota Twins from 2012 to 2013, and Atlanta Braves in 2014.

There were no Gold Gloves.

Stats: There were 3,234 opportunities, 2,907 outs, 285 assists, and 42 mistakes.

Fielding percentage: 987,

dWAR: -1.9, and total zone runs at position: -24.

5. Gary Sanchez

Career: From 2015 to the present

Teams: New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins are the teams.
